Identification

The black rat’s coat varies from grey to black. Black rats generally reach a length of 15 to 20 cm, to which is added a long tail of 20 cm.  He is an excellent climber and can swim but is not attracted to water.

Biological cycle

From 9 to 15 months. Sexual maturity after 12 weeks. From 3 to 10 juveniles per litter and up to 6 to 8 litters per year.

Feeding

Omnivorous: 25 to 30 g of food per day. Needs a lot of fresh water.

Living areas

In general, it does not have a burrow. Excellent climber. It is mainly used in high places, in attics, attics, attics, empty spaces between furniture and walls. Particularly active at night. Very suspicious.

Nuisances

Damage to materials and structures caused by gnawing (wood, electrical wires, pipes, insulation, etc.). Eats and pollutes food.

Transmitted diseases: salmonella by feces, leptospirosis by urine, foot-and-mouth disease or murine typhus, plague via parasites such as fleas.
